Copenhangin’ but can’t Fly

Sorry It’s been so long since i’ve posted! Anywho,I spent last weekend in Copenhagen, Denmark.

I love Copenhagen.

Although the language proved beyond my comprehension or ability to even decipher the letters used by the natives, Copenhagen captured my heart and froze my toes. Although I do have to admit that I was quite sick during my  holiday, it did not put an overall damper on my time in Denmark.

I spent the days walking around Copenhagen with my friends and eating good food. We went on a canal tour, saw the “mermaid”… well I didn’t but my friends did (I was actually pretty sick).

However, the trip home proved an obstacle of its own.

Story time:

Diabetes supplies are expensive, heavy, bulky and necessary for my survival. I had no problem carrying my average-sized carryon onto the plane on the way to Copenhagen, but upon my arrival at the airport from Copenhagen back to London, I immediately was told to check my bag. Well, I could not check my bag, as it had all of my necessary diabetes equipment in it, including my insulin that needed to be kept at a stable temperature.

Commence minor panic attack.

I have never been so thoroughly mistreated by an airline. Norwegian Air yelled at me, chastised me, refused to let me speak to a supervisor, then once they did, she proceeded to yell at me as well. I know I can be less than levelheaded at times- but when it comes to my health I don’t mess around. No one would see reason, including prohibiting me from gate-checking my bag so as to ensure I would have my supplies at hand up until boarding time.

I was then told that they “don’t do that”… even though they did. I was forced to check my bag. I had to take out as much of my supplies as I could, and carry them (loose) onto the plane. Although I am lucky that they did not loose my bag, the entire experience left me upset and shocked at the lack of understanding of such a common disease. Anywho, moral of the story: Don’t fly Norwegian Air.

Re-reading this, perhaps it’s something that you had to be there to understand. Oh well, sharing is caring, right? Sorry for the rant.

Look for another post sometime this week!

Stay warm and beautiful

Got the Queen on Speed Dial

Touristy things commenced this week as my friends and I set out to make our mark on Londontown. Who knew that this city harbored so many different languages (by tourists and immigrants alike) as well as nationalities? Everyone knew that? I’m late to the game…oops. I expected the nations under the crown to remain represented in the capital, but I did not expect the mass amount of community from people near and far.

My dorm (in a fancy shmancy part of town… classic BU) resides among the consulates of many different countries across the globe. To be honest, it’s both terrifying (the armed men standing outside some select embassies) as well as fascinating and amazing that so many countries can share the same solid ground, but even a light tap such as a difference in religion or opinion can create a fissure difficult to fix.

Okay, I digress–enough of this serious speculation. London is AHMAHZING. I find myself 1 glass of wine in and showing off my horrible English accent (okay that only happened once–still wrong to do).

But, am so lucky to be in an amazing city with my twister, old friends and so many new. People are cool. People are weird. People rock (also some don’t but I guess that comes with the territory). I find myself missing my Boston loves as well as my Florida Peeps, but I am content with gallivanting around this historical city until time brings us back together.

Back to my adventures. Over the last week I walked around 6-7 miles a day (one day I walked around 10 miles!!!!! Hello toned calves). This is a strugg with diabetes… #diabetethis. I have gone through enough candy and turned off my insulin to keep a kid up for an entire year. I’ve switched to apple sauce in case anyone sees me strutting the streets of London with baby food… get at me. This is real this is me.

Any who, I visited some classic tourist sights in England like Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, and some other places as well. So far, Buckingham palace is my favorite. I love that the royal family lives in such a historic location, behind high gates and guards. I find it both satirical and awe-inducing.

I’ll try to post more often, but after all, London is Calling!

Stay Beautiful

Gallivanting Around L-Town

FullSizeRender

A snap I took whilst on a stroll through London(town)

Traveling is exhausting, especially when you’re lugging around 2 suitcases, a backpack, and a 20 pound bag full of six months worth of diabetes supplies. Someone get me a drink…pronto.

Okay, now that I finally had my first completely legal drink (in London no less!) I can sit back on my “bed,” (thanks BU, I clearly see where my massive tuition is going) and fight off the encroaching jet lag. That being said, I managed to get by with only a 30 minute nap within the last 24 hours or so. Let’s just say that I am feeling pretty delirious at this point, so this post will be quite short.

London is great so far. The people are sassy, the city exudes a liveliness unrivaled by any of its American counterparts- the people do not ooze with desire to outshine one another, they do not seem to care what the other manages to accomplish in a short amount of time, nor do they even seem to care if someone does better than them in certain games or jokes.

Londoners do not seem to care about competition (in the specific sense of the word, like work-wise), but rather they seem content walking the streets after a pint or two, laughing and making completely inappropriate but satisfying (in my opinion, I love a good shocking joke) one-liners.

While this marks my 14th hour in this stunning city, I feel like I know this place, aside from the fact that I visited for a few days ten years ago. I cannot wait to meet new people, live, laugh and overall enjoy my time abroad.

Look forward to some more posts as I explore the Eastern Hemisphere.

XOXO

Fashionable Friend of the Month: Ariella

Hi guys!

This month’s fashionable friend is one of my oldest (besties for 15 years!) and sassiest friends, Ariella. Laughing one of the highest pitch laughs, making fun of everyone (herself included), being feisty and fashionable constitute just a few of her favorite things. She also enjoys all things pugs and Kate Spade.

I hope you enjoy scrolling through her outfits and getting a glimpse of what I have to deal with all of the time–just kidding she’s a gem and I adore her.

Her fashion sense (in my so humble opinion) stems from an Audrey Hepburn meets Blaire Waldorf type of style, which just so happen to be two of my favorite fashion icons (yes I just said Blaire Waldorf is a fashion icon–judge me…#haterzgunnahate).

Anyways, I’m sending love and warm thoughts from sunny Florida, until I head over to London a week from tomorrow! AH!

Much love and stay warm!

XOXO

Pop, Fizz, Clink to 2015

As tomorrow brings a new day and with it a new year, I feel it an appropriate time to take a glance back at 2014’s Highs and Lows (in life and blood sugar).

First things first (I’m the realest-jk), 2014 showed me, well… myself. I discovered my strengths (in my self and in my friends and family), my weaknesses (always chocolate cake and Netflix) and everything in between.

2014 revealed my Diabetes. 2014 showed me that I can laugh through the sadness. And, at the risk of sounding dramatic (LOL classic me) 2014 personified my future. No more late night snacking on whatever I want, no more morning workouts without eating breakfast, no more- well no more normal life.

However, with the changes of 2014, I can say yes to healthy eating, yes to routine, yes to friends and family that continue to support me and my constant babbling about my health and life aspirations. With 2014 I say yes to London and New York City and Boston. I say yes to the Florida sun and tanning on the beach with my pumps out for the world to see. I say yes to so much-yes to me.

As quickly as I glanced back at 2014, I look forward to 2015.

Next year brings new, untold stories, adventures, friends, countries, twists and turns and so much more. I would be lying if I said I was not anxious about what the future holds, but with that anxiety comes a semblance of strength. With a year like 2014, and all of those twenty-something years that got me to where I am today, I know that with every year comes a new lesson, and every lesson an important block in the foundation of my life.

2015 is an unwritten chapter in my life story, and I cannot wait to see what this chapter brings.

Stay tuned for London posts! I will also post abroad updates on this blog. Let me know if you have any specific ideas for posts!

Stay beautiful and kind!
